Privacy Policy

Effective Date: September 2026

Humans in Control respects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and when we make it available to others. We do not sell personal information to data brokers, advertisers, or unaffiliated organizations.

For questions, contact [email protected].

Who We Are

Humans in Control Incorporated, a 501(c)(3) public charity, and Humans in Control Action Incorporated, an affiliated 501(c)(4) social welfare organization, are separate legal entities that collaborate under the Humans in Control name. This Privacy Policy applies to both organizations. Official Humans in Control chapters are part of Humans in Control, not independent organizations.

Information We Collect

  • Contact and participation information. This may include your name, email address, phone number, ZIP code, street address, campaign participation, petition signatures and comments, stories and sharing permissions, form responses, event RSVPs, chapter or volunteer interests, and communication preferences.
  • Information you choose to make public. Some campaigns let you display limited information, such as your first name, last initial, and comment.
  • Technical and usage information. This may include pages viewed, actions taken, browser and device information, referring pages, advertising source, and IP address. The tracking sections below explain the choices available to you.
  • Volunteer application drafts. After you enter a valid email address, we may securely save your progress and send one email with a link to continue. An unfinished draft is not a submitted application.
  • Bot-protection information. Our forms use automated abuse-prevention tools. These tools may process browser, device, and IP information to distinguish people from automated abuse.

How We Use Your Information

We use collected information to:
  • Process your participation in campaigns and actions, including petitions, pledges, letters to elected officials, contact-your-representative tools, volunteer applications, and event registrations; deliver campaign actions and messages to the recipients shown on the form; and receive and use stories according to the sharing choices on the form
  • Subject to your communication choices, keep you updated about campaigns, events, advocacy, fundraising, and volunteering; Humans in Control Action may also contact you about elections
  • Support official Humans in Control chapters
  • Respond to questions and provide what you request
  • Help you finish a volunteer application you started
  • Operate, secure, and improve our website and services
  • Measure site traffic and campaign performance

Sharing of Information

We do not sell personal information to data brokers, advertisers, or unaffiliated organizations. We share it only in the limited circumstances described below.

  • Affiliated organization. We may make certain supporter contact information available to Humans in Control Action Incorporated, a separate affiliated 501(c)(4) organization, for its own advocacy and election-related communications. Humans in Control Action Incorporated is responsible for its own communications. Both Humans in Control Incorporated and Humans in Control Action Incorporated honor unsubscribe requests.
  • Official chapters and volunteers. If you participate in a form, campaign, petition, or event associated with an official Humans in Control chapter or volunteer-led activity, designated chapter leaders and authorized volunteers may access the information you provide to organize and follow up. They act on behalf of Humans in Control and may use the information only for official Humans in Control activities.
  • AI Reality Check partners. AI Reality Check is a coalition effort supported by partner organizations. If you sign up for AI Reality Check through realitycheckhq.org, we may share your interest in the program and the contact information you provide with AI Reality Check partners listed on the signup form or website. Partners may use this information to organize and follow up about AI Reality Check and related work. We do not share mobile numbers, SMS opt-in data, or consent with partners for marketing or promotional purposes. Each partner is responsible for its own communications, privacy practices, and applicable unsubscribe or opt-out requests.
  • Service providers. We use contracted providers for hosting, security, analytics, contact management, communications, text messaging, form processing, and related operations. They may process information only to provide services to us, subject to appropriate restrictions, and may not use it for their own marketing.
  • Legal and safety needs. We may disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect people, our organization, or our systems.

Campaigns, Petitions, and Pledges

When you participate in a campaign – such as signing a petition or taking a pledge – we use the information you provide to record your participation and carry out the action. The form will explain what information is collected and how it will be used.

If you choose to display your participation publicly, we may display the information described on the form, such as your first name, last initial, and comment. We do not make your email address, phone number, or street address public.

Connecting With Congress

When you use a “Tell Congress” form, we use your home address to identify the congressional office or offices shown to you before you send. Your address also lets each office verify that you are a constituent.

We transmit your prefix, name, email address, full home address, and letter to the offices identified on the form using their official submission systems. We retain only the delivery result so we can maintain an accurate record and troubleshoot delivery failures.

We do not publish or save your letter or home address. Congressional offices may contact you according to their own practices.

Cookies, Analytics, and Ad Measurement

We use analytics and advertising-measurement tools to understand site traffic, measure which campaigns and ads lead to participation, and improve our website. These tools may receive page and referring-page information, browser and device information, IP address, a cookie identifier, and whether a visitor completed an action.

We do not use these tools for ad personalization or remarketing, and we do not send form contact information, addresses, message content, or SMS consent data through them. Traffic-measurement and basic ad-measurement cookies run by default. We honor Global Privacy Control and do not set advertising cookies when your browser sends that signal.

Analytics Choices

Use the button below to turn analytics off in this browser. When it is off, we set no analytics or ad cookies and send only limited cookieless measurement signals.

This setting is stored in your browser. If you clear your cookies and site data, or switch to another browser, you’ll need to set it again. We do not store this setting on any server.

Ad Measurement Choices

On some action pages, advertising-measurement providers receive limited technical and activity data so we can understand whether our ads are effective. Some state privacy laws call this “sharing.” Use the button below to stop these tools from loading in this browser. You can also enable Global Privacy Control, which we honor by default.

This setting is stored in your browser. If you clear your cookies and site data, or switch to another browser, you’ll need to opt out again. We do not store this setting on any server.

How Long We Keep Information

We keep personal information only as long as reasonably needed for the purposes in this policy and for legal, security, and recordkeeping obligations. We may keep a limited record of an unsubscribe or opt-out request so we continue to honor it.

Volunteer drafts are deleted after 14 days or after the application is submitted. Access for designated chapter leaders and authorized volunteers is limited to the duration of their roles.

Data Security

We implement reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect your information. However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is completely secure.

Children's Privacy

Our website is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us and we will take steps to delete it.

Data we receive through this program may include your mobile number, your carrier’s name, and the date, time, and content of your messages. We use it to operate the program, honor your preferences, prevent abuse, and respond to you. We do not sell, rent, or share your mobile number, SMS opt-in data, or consent with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. We may provide this information to service providers, wireless carriers, and other vendors only as necessary to operate and deliver the program.

Delivery is not guaranteed and may be delayed or unsuccessful because of carrier, network, device, or other conditions outside our control.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. We will post changes here and update the effective date. We will not use an update to materially expand the kinds of messages you agreed to receive or the organizations authorized to send them without obtaining any additional consent required.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will update the effective date above and provide additional notice when a change materially affects how we use personal information.
