Political Director
Political Director Opportunity
Bridge AI safety concerns with concrete state policy wins, and intent for later federal victories.
You’ll design and execute our state legislative campaign strategy, with an eye to federal policy, ensuring grassroots energy translates into real policy and political pressure.
You’ll recognize opportunities, develop our political strategy, build coalitions, and translate AI safety into action. This role requires sophisticated understanding of both AI risks and political machinery.
This is a leadership team position, with the opportunity to shape humanity’s response to risks from AI starting from zero. Join the Executive Director in crafting this organization and getting it off the ground.
About Us
Humans in Control is a new grassroots movement focused on AI safety and existential risk reduction. Our aim is to translate public concern into sustained political pressure that ensures artificial intelligence is developed and deployed safely, transparently, and responsibly.
We are not a “grasstops” lobbying shop. Instead, we are building a distributed, grassroots organization:
- Affinity groups (8–12 people) that meet weekly for campaign actions and community.
- Constituency-specific engagement (parents, faith leaders, engineers, students, health professionals, lawyers, artists…)
- Quarterly campaign “spikes” coordinated nationally (letters, teach-ins, district meetings, media pushes).
- State legislative focus — we support and amplify existing AI safety legislation through testimony, constituent pressure, and coalition partnerships.
Our leadership model is deliberately distributed:
- The Executive Director anchors strategy and keeps the AI safety focus.
- A Spokes Council and trained local leaders carry the charisma and storytelling.
- Directors of Policy, Organizing, Communications, and Operations own their lanes and co-lead the organization as peers.
We’re seeking founding team members and board leaders to help build this from the ground up.
Responsibilities
- Track, vet, and prioritize state-level AI safety bills; maintain bill calendars and whip counts
- Identify opportunities for grassroots support: hearings, floor votes, amendment pushes

- Track, analyze, and brief leadership team & organizing leaders on AI policy developments
- Prepare and support volunteers with testimony, one-pagers, and district meeting toolkits

- Provide policy expertise to support fundraising and donor engagement
