Operations Director
Operations Director
Build the operational backbone for a distributed, fast-scaling movement.
You’ll establish systems that enable explosive growth while maintaining compliance, efficiency, security, and mission alignment. This role requires experience with the unique demands of political/grassroots organizations and high-growth scenarios.
This is a leadership team position, with the opportunity to shape humanity’s response to risks from AI starting from zero. Join the Executive Director in crafting this organization and getting it off the ground.
About Us
Humans in Control is a new grassroots movement focused on AI safety and existential risk reduction. Our aim is to translate public concern into sustained political pressure that ensures artificial intelligence is developed and deployed safely, transparently, and responsibly.
We are not a “grasstops” lobbying shop. Instead, we are building a distributed, grassroots organization:
- Affinity groups (8–12 people) that meet weekly for campaign actions and community.
- Constituency-specific engagement (parents, faith leaders, engineers, students, health professionals, lawyers, artists…)
- Quarterly campaign “spikes” coordinated nationally (letters, teach-ins, district meetings, media pushes).
- State legislative focus — we support and amplify existing AI safety legislation through testimony, constituent pressure, and coalition partnerships.
Our leadership model is deliberately distributed:
- The Executive Director anchors strategy and keeps the AI safety focus.
- A Spokes Council and trained local leaders carry the charisma and storytelling.
- Directors of Policy, Organizing, Communications, and Operations own their lanes and co-lead the organization as peers.
We’re seeking founding team members and board leaders to help build this from the ground up.
Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) compliance structures
- Implement financial systems for both large donor and grassroots fundraising
- Develop vendor relationships and contracts for events, technology, materials
- Create data management and cybersecurity protocols
- Oversee legal compliance for political activities and lobbying restrictions
- Manage reporting systems for board and funders
- Manage crisis scenarios and rapid response operations
What We’re Looking For
- 4+ years operations experience in nonprofit, campaign, or political organizations
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit compliance and campaign finance law
- Experience scaling organizations from startup to 4+ employees and hundreds of volunteers
- Experience with high-growth scenarios and crisis management
- Understanding of security considerations for politically sensitive organizations
- Strong project management skills with ability to juggle multiple complex initiatives
- Comfortable with controversial positions and organizational scrutiny
- Genuine concern for risks from AI, including potential existential risks (mitigating risks from extinction from AI due to loss of control from advanced future AI e.g. here, here, here)
Ideal Candidates Bring
- Previous experience with both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations
- Campaign COO or similar high-pressure operations experience
- Knowledge of grassroots organizing infrastructure needs
- Cybersecurity and operational security experience
- Experience managing remote and distributed teams
