Grassroots Engagement Director
Grassroots Engagement Director / Potential Cofounder Opportunity
Design and lead the grassroots backbone of this movement.
We need an experienced grassroots organizer to build and lead this movement. You’ll design the grassroots strategy and tactics from the ground up, including architecting the volunteer infrastructure, affinity groups, and mobilization tactics that transform public concern into political pressure. You’ll be connecting parents, faith leaders, engineers, students, artists, and more to legislative campaigns.
This is a leadership team position, with the opportunity to shape humanity’s response to risks from AI starting from zero. (There is also potential to join as a cofounder, depending on experience.) Join the Executive Director in crafting this organization and getting it off the ground.
About Us
Humans in Control is a new grassroots movement focused on AI safety and existential risk reduction. Our aim is to translate public concern into sustained political pressure that ensures artificial intelligence is developed and deployed safely, transparently, and responsibly.
We are not a “grasstops” lobbying shop. Instead, we are building a distributed, grassroots organization:
- Affinity groups (8–12 people) that meet weekly for campaign actions and community.
- Constituency-specific engagement (parents, faith leaders, engineers, students, health professionals, lawyers, artists…)
- Quarterly campaign “spikes” coordinated nationally (letters, teach-ins, district meetings, media pushes).
- State legislative focus — we support and amplify existing AI safety legislation through testimony, constituent pressure, and coalition partnerships.
Our leadership model is deliberately distributed:
- The Executive Director anchors strategy and keeps the AI safety focus.
- A Spokes Council and trained local leaders carry the charisma and storytelling.
- Directors of Policy, Organizing, Communications, and Operations own their lanes and co-lead the organization as peers.
We’re seeking founding team members and board leaders to help build this from the ground up.
Responsibilities
- Design grassroots strategy and tactics from the ground up
- Build affinity groups and leadership ladders (snowflake model)
- Develop tailored engagement pathways for different constituencies
- Develop engagement ladder from first-touch to leadership
- Create coalition partnerships with relevant constituencies
- Coordinate grassroots contributions to state legislative campaigns
- Build and manage a team of regional/state organizers
- Establish systems for volunteer onboarding, tracking, and appreciation
- Partner with leadership team on fundraising and donor engagement
What We’re Looking For
- 3+ years leading successful grassroots campaigns with measurable growth
- Experience with “outside game” pressure campaigns on legislation
- Track record building from start to 1000+ active volunteers
- Data-driven approach to organizing with strong analytical skills
- Genuine concern for risks from AI, including potential existential risks (mitigating risks from extinction from AI due to loss of control from advanced future AI e.g. here, here, here)
- Comfortable starting from zero; ability to hire their own team from the ground up and build all infrastructure
- Excellent internal and external communication skills, adaptive and responsive to feedback and developments
- Unwavering commitment to truth-tracking and non-deceptive messaging
Ideal Candidates Bring
- Experience with bipartisan organizing strongly preferred
- Experience with both digital organizing and in-person movement building (in-person experience required)
