Communications Director
Communications Director / Potential Cofounder Opportunity
Create the narrative and train the voices of the movement.
You’ll design the messaging strategy, manage the Spokes Council (rotating diverse spokespeople), and ensure AI safety risks are framed clearly and compellingly across partisan lines. You’ll make the movement feel alive, inclusive, and disciplined, with a rotating public face from our membership.
More broadly, shape the narrative around AI for this movement. You’ll craft messages that make complex AI risks accessible and actionable for diverse audiences while maintaining scientific accuracy. This role requires translating risks from AI, including existential risk, into compelling calls-to-action.
This is a leadership team position, with the opportunity to shape humanity’s response to risks from AI starting from zero. (There is also potential to join as a cofounder, depending on experience.) Join the Executive Director in crafting this organization and getting it off the ground.
About Us
Humans in Control is a new grassroots movement focused on AI safety and existential risk reduction. Our aim is to translate public concern into sustained political pressure that ensures artificial intelligence is developed and deployed safely, transparently, and responsibly.
We are not a “grasstops” lobbying shop. Instead, we are building a distributed, grassroots organization:
- Affinity groups (8–12 people) that meet weekly for campaign actions and community.
- Constituency-specific engagement (parents, faith leaders, engineers, students, health professionals, lawyers, artists…)
- Quarterly campaign “spikes” coordinated nationally (letters, teach-ins, district meetings, media pushes).
- State legislative focus — we support and amplify existing AI safety legislation through testimony, constituent pressure, and coalition partnerships.
Our leadership model is deliberately distributed:
- The Executive Director anchors strategy and keeps the AI safety focus.
- A Spokes Council and trained local leaders carry the charisma and storytelling.
- Directors of Policy, Organizing, Communications, and Operations own their lanes and co-lead the organization as peers.
We’re seeking founding team members and board leaders to help build this from the ground up.

- Develop and continuously test messaging across bipartisan demographics
- Build and manage a Spokes Council (parents, clergy, youth, engineers, clinicians).

- Create crisis communications protocols for AI incidents or movement controversies
- Build relationships with journalists across the political spectrum
- Work with technical subject matter experts to ensure accuracy
- Produce compelling content: op-eds, explainer videos, campaign materials, social assets, newsletters
- Support fundraising with clear, emotionally resonant donor communications

- Track record of earned media wins and social media growth
- Experience with crisis comms and controversial issues
- Skilled in distributed networks (can maintain message discipline across volunteers)
- Genuine concern for risks from AI, including potential existential risks (mitigating risks from extinction from AI due to loss of control from advanced future AI e.g. here, here, here)
- Strong internal communicator, adaptive and responsive to feedback and developments
- Strong strategist and executor: building the movement’s communications from the ground up
- Unwavering commitment to truth-tracking and non-deceptive messaging
Ideal Candidates Bring
